Salmonella Control

Salmonella Control

Salmonella bacteria may enter the bird via several routes, but the main causes of transmission on the farm are the arrival of new animals, contaminated water and feed systems, farm housing and insufficient biosecurity measures

These varied routes make reducing Salmonella in the feed-to-food chain a complex issue, which is why Trouw Nutrition Selko has developed an integrated programme that can be tailor made to fit the customer’s situation. The solution begins with a Salmonella audit to find exactly where the problem lies. This is the starting point to determine the strategy to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella (S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium).

Which products help controlling Salmonella in this programme?

Selko’s water and feed additives Selko®-pH and Fysal® Fit-4 support the healthy status of the animal intestine to reduce the risk of colonisation.

Selko pH

Selko®-pH is a synergistic blend of free and high-buffered organic acids for drinking water. Acidified drinking water reduces stomach pH and supports digestion. Buffered organic acids also help maintain microbial balance in the intestine and contribute to the normal Salmonella-free status of poultry in the feed-to-food chain

Fysal Fit-4

Fysal Fit-4 poultry contains multiple barriers to reduce enterobacteria. It lowers S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium contamination in feed, reduces transfer to the crop and stomach, and reduces attachment to intestinal enterocytes by blocking receptors. Also, it may stimulate commensal bacteria growth and support natural mechanisms to affect the genetic potential of enterobacteria, such as Salmonella enteritidis, to colonise the bird.

This all-inclusive strategy can be customised to your needs and farming circumstances, and will help reduce the risk of bird-to-bird transmission in a flock.

Services

Salmonella audit

The Selko team Salmonella audit analyses the entire production chain: feed production, breeding, farming and slaughtering, including analysis of critical control points (CCPs), serotyping of bacteria and monitoring progress. The main purpose of the audit is to analyse the origin of contamination and the possible cause of spreading. In the event of Salmonella being discovered, the positive samples will be serotyped to identify the source of contamination.

After the audit, Selko provides customised advice on product application and hygiene management, based on a specific feed programme, feed production process and farm circumstances. Finally, the Selko specialist will advise production staff on awareness and prevention of recontamination in feed production, breeding and animal production.
